Panasonic has announced the new Lumix DMC-FZ10 camera which features a huge 12X precision Leica optical zoom lens (35 to 420mm), F2.8 brightness through the entire zoom range, optical image stabilization, a very fast shutter lag speed, and a 1/2.5 inch 4 megapixel CCD. The new Panasonic also has a nice live histogram feature, a 4 frame per second burst mode, movie capture with sound at 30 frames per second, and it has a full 2 inch LCD monitor. The DMC-FZ10 has also has advanced functioning including full manual exposure controls and shooting modes, manual focusing, an automatic pop-up flash, use of SD cards, and it comes with a rechargeable battery pack and charger unit. This sounds like a very interesting camera and quite a nice development by Panasonic who are apparently trying even harder to come out with competitive digital cameras in a very crowded yet rapidly changing market. ADOBE ANNOUNCES NEW PHOTOSHOP CREATIVE SUITE (09/29/03)
Adobe has announced what many thought would be Photoshop 8 today, but instead has taken a new direction by calling the new upgrade to Photoshop and related digital imaging programs, Adobe Creative Suite. The announcement at this time is not a surprise as Photoshop has been upgraded approximately every 18 months over the past several years. The new Adobe Creative Suite includes several individual applications including Photoshop CS, Adobe Illustrator CS and Adobe GoLive CS. Upgrades for the Premium Edition CS cost $799 and the standard edition upgrade is $599. Photoshop CS alone can be upgraded for $169 with a cost of $649 for new purchasers. Photoshop is one of the most powerful digital camera editing tools currently available, and is widely used by advanced digital camera users and professionals all over the world. This new version continues the tradition of offering some of the most sophisticated image editing with many new features. UPDATE: Information recently posted by Adobe indicates that several cameras not listed on the new Adobe Photoshop CS RAW Support Web site are in fact supported in the new Photoshop CS including the Olympus E-1, the Canon Digital Rebel and the Minolta A-1. Currently, it is unknown if new Olympus C-5060 files will be supported, although the similar files from the C-5050 are supported. We also do not know if the Pentax *ist is supported, but so far the answer appears that it is not. Adobe also indicated that the Sony F828 is not yet supported in the new Photoshop CS, implying by the wording of this information that its just a matter of time before it will be and that periodic free RAW plug-in updates (the frequency was NOT provided intentionally) will be forthcoming from Adobe for addition RAW formats and cameras. That sure is good news as it would be tragic for Adobe to wait for Photoshop 9 or Photoshop CS 2 or whatever it will be called to come out in another 18 months. We are very pleased to see such good support by Adobe for all the new RAW formats, as more and more cameras will have RAW capture in the future.

EPSON has recently started shipments of 4 by 6 inch Premium Glossy Photo Paper in packs of 100 pre-cut sheets for borderless 4 by 6 inch prints at a retail price of $14.99. We have seen the paper at various retail stores over the past few weeks, and it appears to be stocked now at most major stores which sell digital cameras and Epson Printers including Frys, Best Buy and MicroCenters. While we also like other papers, the Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper remains our favourite for digital camera prints on our Epson 6 ink Photo Printers, as it is the closest in our opinion to lab prints. The release of pre-cut sheets to retail stores in a package like this has been a long wait as Epson previously only had 4 by 6 inch PGPP paper in rolls which many Epson Photo Printers could not use and then more recently last Winter they added 50 sheet packages that were available as far as we could ever determine only on the Epson Web site. Currently you can buy an Epson 820 Photo Printer for $79 and obtain excellent photo results.
We expect Epson to announce new printers sometime soon and the Epson Japan site does list new printers and inks, but so far no word from Epson USA what they will release here. The new printers announced for Japan include the PX-G900 printer which features an amazing 1.5 picoliter ink droplet volume and a new 8 color PX-G ink set which can be printed out at a resolution of 2880 by 1440. The new inks appear to have properties that allow for longer lasting prints then previous dye based inks and improves on the color range which had been a limitation with previous pigment based inks (Dye inks generally print brighter more colorful glossy prints but they also tend to fade or have color shifting much faster with exposure to light or ozone). Epson appears to have come up with a break-through in ink technology as previous longer lasting pigment inks not only had less vibrant color results but they also were difficult to spray out at the smaller picoliter volumes dye-based inks could accomplish. We will have to wait for more details on the new printers and especially the new inks from Epson USA as well as learn just what photo papers will work best with the new inks, or if new papers will be coming out to maximize the benefits of the new inks. Stay tuned as the competition for home printing of digital camera images is really heating up.

Phil Askey over at DP REVIEW has posted some Olympus E-1 samples taken by Les Freed at the US Grand Prix this weekend. These images appear to come from the most recent update of the firmware for the soon to be released Olympus E-1 DSLR and are very impressive, especially compared to initial samples from earlier pre-production units. Those of you interested in the Olympus E-1 should be sure to check out the Olympus E-1 samples and news item at DPREVIEW.
Phil Askey has also posted some of the first Minolta DiMage A-1 production samples pictures we have seen. The Minolta A-1 is a new advanced 5 megapixel prosumer fixed lens digital camera with some very interesting features, including a new Image Stabilising system. These samples of the Minolta A-1 demonstrate that the A-1 is able to take really very high quality images and they sure do appear to be improvements over the model it succeeds, the Dimage 7Hi which we used and reviewed last November. Pentax has announced the new lightweight 3.2 megapixel, 3X optical zoom (equivalent to a 38-114mm lens in 35mm format) Optio 33LF digital camera which has a 1.6 inch LCD monitor that swivels 180 degrees horizontally and up to 270 degrees vertically. The camera also has a movie mode (no audio), an optical viewfinder, a variety of shooting modes, built in auto-flash, Macro Focus as close as .33 feet, a world time function that displays time in 62 cities across the globe, a group of included software titles such as ACDSee and more valued at over $150 dollars, a weight of just 6.2 ounces without battery or memory card, uses two AA batteries, and has 12MB of internal memory in addition to use of SD or MMC storage cards. The press release does not indicate when the camera will be available or the suggested price, but states the camera will complete the Pentax 2003 holiday line-up, so we assume it will be available by late November.
In other Pentax news, the Pentax *ist, a small 6.3 megapixel Digital SLR camera is scheduled to ship in the month of September so those who have been interested in this camera should be able to find it soon. The *ist uses the same Sony DSLR CCD imager found in the Nikon D100 DSLR, and thus should be capable of very good results. The camera does require use of Pentax lenses however they do have some nice ones. For those who would like to see how good the image quality can be Phil Askey has posted a nice gallery of *ist sample images at DP Review.

A company called MAGIX has announced a new program for digital camera owners called PhotoStory on CD & DVD 2004. The program features motion transitions, the ability to add music and narration, and there are many special effects to create a theatrical experience when viewing slideshows which can be watched on TV. The program allows for editing of the images and you can make professional looking DVD menus. The program ships with the high quality Ligos GoMotion Mpeg-2 encoder. Kyocera Announces Two Breakthrough Digital Cameras With the World's Fastest Continuous Capture Rate
Here is a press release we did not have a chance to post earlier from over a week ago. Kyocera has announced two really interesting cameras with some very important features. The S5R is a 5 megapixel camera and the Finecam SL300R is a 3.2 megapixel camera. Both cameras have extremely fast shutter lag times, which means the camera will focus and take the shots almost instantly, and more like what many film camera users are more familiar with. Kyocera is attempting to remove one of the bigger criticisms of earlier Digital cameras which many found to be very frustrating in trying to capture such things as family shots, but the camera wouldn't take the picture before the moment was lost. In addition, many have been unable to take advantage of the promise of digital cameras to take lots of shots and then just keep the best when shooting sports or fast action because the continuous burst modes were very limited unless you went up to DSLR cameras at a cost of a few thousand dollars. Kyocera is claiming these new cameras have the fastest continuous capture rate at aprox. 3 frames per second and that they will take as many pictures in rapid sequence for as long as you have memory space on the flash memory card inserted into the camera. CANON EOS-300D DIGITAL REBEL PRODUCTION CAMERA SAMPLES POSTED & SOME INITIAL IMPRESSIONS (09/15/03)
Ever since Canon made the somewhat stunning announcement about their new $899 EOS-300D Digital Rebel DSLR camera on August 20, 2003, there has been a lot of interest in how final production model cameras will perform and how the camera will compare to its big brother (which has the same 6 megapixel CMOS image sensor) the recent Canon EOS-10D DSLR which sells for $1499. We have obtained a final production EOS-300D digital camera kit (it comes with a 28 - 90 mm zoom lens for $100 more at $999) and have started our process of testing the camera's performance for our review opinions. We also own a Canon 10D for our use on this web site, so we are quite familiar with the Canon 10D. The Digital Rebel camera is just beginning to ship this week and because there are very few production level samples posted on the Internet for evaluation purposes (the recent reviews posted by our friends at the other Internet Review sites were pre-production models), we are going to put up some of our early samples at this time. Below we have posted a link to our first of many unaltered sample galleries demonstrating the results we obtained from the new Digital Rebel. We believe these are some of the first production level images from the Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel posted at any of the review sites on the Internet.
The pictures in this initial sample gallery were taken on Sunday September 14th, 2003 in the mid-afternoon at the Upper Newport Bay located in the Newport Beach area of Orange County, in Southern California. This area is a fairly important wild life refuge and as we get later into the fall season, there are great opportunities to see all kinds of wonderful wild life at the bay. Many local schools bring bus loads of kids down to the park where they are taken on tours and given lectures on the many important environmental impacts this Bay area offers. We were fortunate to be able to join with professional photographer Dave Rector who is also one of the educators of the kids who come down to the Bay for this specific shoot with the Canon 300D. Although we also used the camera at this location and obtained some of these shots, most of the images selected for this gallery were taken by Dave Rector as we followed him on a tour of the area. These shots were taken in the Program (Auto) mode, the Sports mode (we tracked birds with the AI Servo mode with amazingly good results and with the ISO selected by this mode at 400), and a few in the Macro mode, all in the Fine JPEG Quality, during a fairly hazy/ partly foggy day down at the beach area where the Back Bay is located. The camera was kept in the Parameter 1 setting (and most other camera defaults) which sets the contrast, saturation and sharpness levels to a +1 setting. Many who have used the Canon 10D are aware that its main default modes have these three settings at "0" (Zero), which many of those who use software for post-shot editing actually prefer. However, many users moving up from the more point and shoot style digital cameras found the 10D settings to be a bit lacking in punch compared to what they are used to and some felt the images are initially a bit soft in the sharpness. We did find that these Parameter 1 shots do make the images straight out of the camera closer to a lot of the non-DSLR cameras which so many new users are familiar with, and thus many new Digital Rebel users will be more comfortable with the results straight out of the camera. This also will assist many non-professional photographers who do not do a lot of work on computes as they will not be so dependent on their abilities to tweak the images in the often intimidating and yet powerful computer software programs such as Photoshop. Those who want the look of the 10D have nothing to fear, as the camera has a Parameter 2 setting, which puts the contrast, saturation and sharpness to the 0 (zero) level, and thus there is nothing to stop Digital Rebel users from doing lot's of post shot editing in programs such as Photoshop, if that is what they prefer to do or using RAW capture for even more control of final image results.
Overall, we found the camera performed wonderfully and the final image quality is very comparable to the Canon 10D. We like the slightly more saturated colors along with the overall look obtained as the outdoor white balance is excellent and metering was very accurate. The images we obtained still looked neutral and mostly similar to the great results many get with the 10D. We did note that in some situations the camera can slightly overexpose the picture by about 1/3 of an F-Stop, with slightly blown out whites in a few instances (which we also noted in the 10D). So far we are quite pleased with the performance of this new very inexpensive lens, which was designed to work only on the EOS-300D and is currently only available when bought as part of the $999 kit. Images taken in the range f/5.6 to f/11 area especially, look great, and those images really snap into a nice sharpness with mild to moderate sharpening in any editing software used when you downsize images for easier web viewing.
While there is a clear difference in the body of the Digital Rebel from 10D due to the use of a fairly good quality plastic compared with the 10D's more professional quality metal and larger body, there is a very beneficial trade-off, as the Digital Rebel is much lighter, and thus much more comfortable for many photographers to carry around their necks and keep with them for those important shots. Also, the 10D has a nice advantage when it comes to the buffer size, as it can handle approximately twice the number of burst mode & continuous shots. However, we found the Digital Rebel to be essentially just a fast as the 10D for most of our shooting so far as the focus was very quick, there is almost no shutter lag ( just like the 10D) and we fired off many burst modes of 3 or 4 shots in just seconds and then another round moments later, eliminating our missing too many shots that we wanted. In our shooting out at the Newport Bay we simply did not miss the heavier weight, the larger size, or the bigger buffer of the outstanding Canon 10D. It just was not a factor for us in this early use of the camera. We also liked the matching weight of the new lens, which was light and gave the camera a good balanced feeling. The Digital Rebel camera also has a really nice hand grip with a good thumb leverage on the back, and we think it will be found by most users to be a comfortable camera to both carry around and use.
We will have more galleries and many more impressions posted in the next few days including some shots we took Saturday night at ISO 800 and 1600 that have very low noise at those levels compared to most other cameras out there right now. In addition, given the late hour we are going to first post a link to the index page only, where you can click on the picture number and view (and download/print using a right click and save as) the original 32 images. We will have full thumbnail galleries with links to 1024 sized images and the originals later today (Monday). For now, those who would like to see some unaltered Production Level Canon EOS-300D Digital Rebel shoots, please check out the link below, and be patient with these large approximate 3MB shots. We think you will like many of these shots, as these are not Mickey Mouse shots, this is a very capable camera for all kinds of photography. Keep in mind, some of these shots we tested out the Sports mode, and/or higher ISOs on purpose just to see how the noise levels compared to point and shoot style cameras. We think that although you do see some higher noise at ISO 400 (for instance the first 3 shots) compared to ISO 100, relatively speaking the results are very very good! Well, go see for yourself!

CANON ANNOUNCES NEW 4 MEGAPIXEL TINY POWERSHOT SD10 DIGITAL ELPH (09/12/03)
Canon is announcing today a new tiny 3.5 ounce, 4 megapixel, fixed 39mm f/2.8 lens, Powershot SD10 Digital Elph camera. The SD10 gets its name in part from the fact it is only the second Canon digital camera to make use of the smaller SD type memory cards (a 32MB card is included in the box) for storage of the camera's images (most other Canon DCs use CompactFlash). This camera is really about as small & portable as it gets right now, and will easily fit into pockets and purses, making sure you always have a camera "handy" (it will easily fit in even the smallest hand) to avoid missing those fun shots you just never know when they will occur. The camera will also possibly keep you in fashion as there are 4 colors to choose from, "Piano Black", Silver, Bronze and "Iridescent White" and each color has its own matching finish material. The SD10 Digital Elph uses a small Battery Pack NB–3L (rechargeable lithium-ion battery) as its power source and comes with a separate charger unit as well as a USB cable for transferring images and printing. The SD10 has support for the new PictBridge standard allowing direct connection of the camera to many of the new PictBridge compatible Photo Printers, avoiding the need of a PC to obtain Photo Prints!

Simple Star's Photo Show Deluxe Software Sample Gallery & Slideshow Posted 09/10/03)
Here is the link to a sample of what you can do with Simple Star's new Photo Show Deluxe Software. This gallery and slideshow features a few dozen shots we took with a Nikon Coolpix 5400 in the Ghost Town of Bodie, California which is near Mono Lake in the High Sierra Nevada Mountains, about one hour past Mammoth Lakes, in Northern California off Highway 395. This gallery was put together in just minutes from over one hundred shots we took of this most interesting historical location. Its a great place to take pictures at, and fun for the entire family. (The kids get more interested when you call it a Ghost Town which it is along with a history of Gold mining, fires and many preserved buildings that were abandoned yet showing what life was like back in those old western days etc....).
The Simple Star software we used called Photo Show Deluxe is a fun program to use and a great way to share your digital camera images. It initially helps you quickly transfer images from a camera or card reader to your PC, organise or as they say "Manage" volumes of images, perform editing functions including rotation, red-eye removal, cropping, brightness, contrast, and saturation controls as well as more, and it allows you to make new albums from your stored digital camera collections (such as a collection of your favourites from several folders) to then share selected pictures via e-mail links to images you upload which are stored on the Simple Star's web site. You can also upload them to ShutterFly for storage and making/ordering prints, you can make online galleries and slideshows such as the sample linked to below (you can even add music), or you can make VCDs to play the images back in a DVD player on your TV. CANON'S $899 DIGITAL SLR REBEL EOS-300D ONLINE PREVIEWS POSTED AT MAJOR INTERNET DIGITAL CAMERA REVIEW SITES (09/04/03)
On August 20th, 2003 Canon made a major announcement in the digital camera arena with news of their new EOS-300D DSLR aka the Digital Rebel here in the United States. This 6 megapixel DSLR features a very high quality CMOS image sensor which has proven itself in the recent Canon 10D with very low noise even at higher ISO settings and the camera has demonstrated that a very fast and responsive digital camera can be built for the mass of consumers who want the performance that had previously only been attainable in much more expensive pro-level digital cameras. The EOS-300D breaks the $1,000.00 price barrier and thus is anticipated to be more attractive to many groups of photographers. It also provides an interchangeable lens system for many long time owners of Canon film cameras who have invested money in Canon Glass. For those who want a general purpose lens right out of the box, Canon is offering a bundle which includes a special new DSLR lens currently for the 300D only with zoom coverage from 28 to 90 mm at just $100.00 more. This camera is aimed directly at the large numbers of people who are most likely to keep up with digital cameras online and thus these reviews/previews now going up are going to be the key source of objective information for the mass consumers to make purchasing decisions. It should be noted these are pre-production units, and we are going to withhold any reviews of the EOS 300D until production units are available and our Canon 10D (for comparison testing) is back from an European Trip. Pentax has announced today three new digital cameras. The Optio 555 is a 5 megapixel, 5X optical zoom lens camera which updates the recent Optio 550 model, with a smaller/lighter body, a faster more responsive shutter lag time and playback mode, and overall enhanced operations capability. The Optio 555 uses SD memory cards for storage. The camera will ship in October, however there is no mention of the MSRP in the Press Release below.
Pentax also announced the Optio S4, which is a 4.23 megapixel, 3X optical zoom lens digital camera which updates the recent Optio S camera, however this time there is a 4.23 megapixel CCD instead of 3 megapixels. It has a 1.6 inch color LCD monitor, a movie mode with audio, many image controls in a small camera and given the unique collapsing lens design, the body is very thin, lightweight and overall very tiny. The Optio S4 will also go on sale in October at a price that is apparently not yet determined for the USA market.
The third camera announced is a unique 3.2 megapixel, 2.8X optical "water resistant" camera called the Optio 33WR. Pentax makes it clear this is not a camera that should be operated underwater, but it can get wet, and even withstand being fully submerged in water for short time frames, as it is designed with special seals to prevent water damage. Pentax indicates the camera will be ideal for those at the beach, those taking pictures of outdoor recreational activities such as water skiing, or for those times you want to use your digital camera out in the rain or snow. It is light weight at just over 7 ounces and it uses 2 AA batteries.
