OLYMPUS ANNOUNCES NEW 8 MEGAPIXEL E-300 EVOLT CONSUMER DSLR & MORE (09/27/04)

Olympus is making a major announcement today with news of their brand new 8 Megapixel E-300 Evolt interchangeable lens camera which appears aimed at competing with the Canon Digital Rebel and the Nikon D70. The camera is somewhat smaller than the competition in part by use of a newly designed TTL Optical Porro viewfinder system and Side Swing Mirro Box which allows a flatter top and an interesting design. The E-300 will have the Supersonic Wave Filter to reduce dust on the CCD found on the Pro E-1 DSLR, an Aluminium Die-Cast Chassis, a metal lens mount, a 160 degree viewing enhanced 'HyperCrystal' high contrast LCD, use of Smart Lenses specifically matched to the Four-Thirds System format, a Slide Pop-Up Built-In Flash, and uses an image centered optical viewfinder with approximately 94% of the image are in view. Some of the E-300 specifications include a 2.5 frames per second burst mode in all camera file formats (there is a 64MB buffer), RAW and RAW+JPEG image capture is available, easy to use Auto and Full Manual Controls along with specific Scene Mode settings. Olympus points out that the new 8MP CCD is a Full-Frame Transfer CCD which allows the area of the pixels that capture light to be larger and produces a wider latitude for greater tonal values. The camera is designed 100% from the ground up for digital capture and it uses the Zuiko Digital Zoom Lenses. Olympus is using the TruePic Turbo image processing engine with new Proper Gama Technology II Advanced Noise Filter Technology II and Advance Spatial Frequency Filter Technology II for better color, contrast and faster processing. The new E-300 EVOLT will work with the new FL-36 TTL Flash as well as the just announced new 14 to 45 & 40 to 150 MM Zuiko Digital Zoom Lenses and the new 7 to 14 MM Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens.

The new E-300 will ship in late December at a price to be determined. For more details and pictures see our Olympus E-300 Evolt Product Page.

Olympus is making several other Digital Camera and related Product Announcements Today. Olympus has just announced a new 1 Gigabyte XD Picture Card Storage Media. In addition Olympus has announced two more consumer digital cameras. For more information see the links below.

ALL NEW A-DIGITAL-EYE-FORUMS ONLINE (09/25/04)!

Last October we found what we hoped to be an excellent Forum Board for this site which we felt was an extremely important feature we needed to offer our readers. The software was designed by Ikonboard and had very powerful Administration features as well as user uploading of digital camera pictures. However, like all boards, to get our banner ads to display correctly, and to tailor it for our needs we had to perform a lot of patch work both with the software and with the access code on our host site. After getting the Forums up and running following hundreds of hours of work, we found that many server/hosts don't like the program for various reasons, which may or may not be valid. We then found just way too many problems occurring, with the software makers and our host constantly pointing the finger back and forth while often the forums were down and our web pages messed up. On one occasion we forgot to thank an administrator for help in getting our crashed Forums up quickly as we brought you the Sony F828 story and samples last Holiday season and then we received very rude replies making us wish we'd never heard of Ikonboard. In addition, with all of our complaints to our Host at ADDR.COM, they often did things that made running this site a nightmare. If those associated with Ikonboard and/or ADDR.Com want to discuss my comments above, feel free to contact me at my LAW PRACTICE!

We have finally had enough as our site has also been repeatedly hacked on announcement days in a very clear pattern of malicious tampering. We have decided to switch programs for our Forums and we are migrating to a new host soon. This may not stop all the problems, and now we are missing a few features, but life is just too short to keep trying to work with difficult people and we need to get back on track in running a quality site with features you want to come back an visit often. Despite the efforts of many others who seem to be very jealous of our site and thus flatter us by spending way too much time and effort playing games and finding lame reason to bad mouth us or in other ways trying to take us down, we remain one of the top web sites anywhere on the Internet related to news and reviews of Digital Imaging Products! And we know we have worked damn long and hard, often benefiting others besides ourselves, to be here! We don't cater to the what have you done for me lately mentality and those who do can go play their games with themselves! We are here to help our readers learn about good digital photography products and get useful information, and we will continue to do so!

These new Forums are much faster on the new host site and offer most of the same capabilities as most forums, along with some different features. Currently you can post images by embedding a link to an images URL that is already posted on the Internet, but you cannot upload image files/attachments for display in a post at this time. The Forum Software does have a Patch to allow this, but a new version is coming soon so we will just upgrade then.

The new Forums are brought to you just in time, as we expect to see all kinds of news and stories coming out of Photokina in Germany. As many of you know next week Photokina begins and as the LARGEST DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW in the world, held every other year, most companies have been making big announcements. Stay tuned as we will help spread the news and information. Just as we did with our prior forum, there will be a forum for posting CURRENT NEWS including NEWS BRIEFS, & PRESS RELEASES, so go check it out along with all the other digital camera topics we have set up for you.

Nikon USA is making several major camera announcements today including the long awaited successor to the D1X camera, the New 12.4 Megapixel D2X DSLR camera. Nikon is also announcing the 8 megapixel Coolpix 8800 camera with large telephoto capabilities and their first consumer digital camera with Image Stabilization, as well as another 8 megapixel camera with emphasis on the wide-angle coverage called the Coolpix 8400. Finally for today Nikon is announcing the new 4 megapixel Coolpix 4800 which features a huge 8.3X optical zoom lens.

First up the new D2X professional DSLR features a new 12.4 DX Format (1.5X Crop) CMOS image sensor with resulting images at 4288 by 2848 resolution. Nikon has including considerable burst modes from a new LSI processing engine with the ability to shoot at 5 frames per second up to 21 JPEGs and 15 NEF (RAW files), or for those needing more speed there is a 6.8 megapixel resolution that allows a burst rate of 8 frames per second. The D2X has a 2.5 inch LCD monitor with 235,000 pixels, it works with a new WT-2A wireless module using 802.11b/g and has a new improve metering called the 3D Color Matrix Metering II system along with new i-TTL flash metering that allows up to 3 groups of wireless flash units. Oh course there is a very fast start up time now and USB 2.0 PC connectivity along with Firewire. Nikon has added two new Adobe RGB color modes and also supports sYCC color profile found in many of the latest printers and providing a wider color gamut. The camera also supports GPS for recording of the location of each shot!

"After digital conversion, a new processing method has been added to increase image-processing precision in the ASIC for smoother display of tones from highlight portions to shadow portions of the image. With optimized distribution of analog and digital white balance gain, the new engine produces smoother gradations with consistent and smooth transitions, all with exceptionally pure color rendition. The D2X also boasts Nikon’s acclaimed Mutli-CAM2000 high-speed AF system that features eleven autofocus sensors of which nine are cross type and placed in the rule of thirds layout. The D2X will be bundled with Nikon’s PictureProject software, an intuitive software application that provides image transfer, image organization, simple image editing (NEF plug-in included), and print layout functions. The D2X is also compatible with Nikon Capture 4.2 software (optional), that features improved functions as well as Nikon Capture Camera Control that can now be used to control the camera from a computer over a USB connection or a wireless LAN (requires WT-2A)."

Next, Nikon is announcing today the Coolpix 8800 which upgrades the Coolpix 8700 that we provided extensive coverage of on this site earlier this year. This new camera features 8 megapixels, a 10X optical zoom lens, and a new Image Stabilization or Vibration Reduction lens technology. The camera has a hot shoe and supports RAW image capture. The camera has a new higher quality build and new mode button along with using a new EN-EL7 battery. It once again uses Compact Flash type II and has USB 2.0 PC connectivity. The new Coolpix 8800 has a movie mode which can shoot at 640 by 480 and 30 frames per second for up to a minute. The camera has a 1.8 inch LCD display which flips out and rotates (like some people we know). It is PictBridge enabled for printing without need for a PC. The CP 8800 will have a price of apox. $999 and will ship this fall.

Nikon is also announcing the new 8 megapixel Coolpix 8400 which shares many of the features of the new CP 8800 above but it has a different body style supporting a wider angle lens coverage starting at 24mm with a 3.5X optical zoom to 85mm and works with a conversion lens to obtain 18mm coverage. It has a 1.8 inch LCD display with a 235,000 pixel electronic viewfinder. There are full manual controls, a metal body, a hot shoe, NEF Raw image file capture is supported, it also has a VGA 30 fps movie mode and it can capture images as close as 3cm. Again it uses the new EN-EL7 battery for new longer lasting power. It has USB 2.0 and is PICTBRIDGE enabled. The CP 8400 ships in September at a price of around $899.

Finally, there is the new Coolpix 4800 which has an 8.3X optical zoom lens coverage from 36 to 300mm. Again there is a 1.8 inch LCD and an electronic viewfinder. This is basically a light weight point and shoot compact camera with the somewhat unique ultra zoom capability for this size and low price range. Nikon indicates the camera will ship this fall for around $399.

KONICA MINOLTA ANNOUNCES NEW MAXXUM 7D DSLR DETAILS, 2 NEW DSLR LENSES, NEW IMAGE SOFTWARE, NEW DSLR ACCESSORY GRIP & NEW 8 MEGAPIXEL A200 DIGITAL CAMERA (09/15/04)

As many of you will recall the Maxxum 7D was first announced at PMA 2004 held almost 7 months ago, and we were among the few selected press to get a preview the night before the show opened of the first very early proto-type that went on display under glass for the public. Since that time the camera has progressed and many of the specifications that were either unknown or not final, can now be revealed. Some of the key features offered by the new Maxxum besides the very impressive Anti-Shake technology built into the CCD image sensor include:

For more DSLR details including product photos, the Press Release, full specifications and Backgrounder information see our Dimage Maxxum 7D Preview Page. Finally, Konica Minolta has announced an updated version of their recently released 2/3 inch 8 megapixel CCD fixed lens camera which is now called the Dimage A200. There appears to be changes to the high resolution viewfinder found on the A2 as well as dial changes etc...The A200 has a nice video movie mode allowing capture at 640 by 480 and 30 frames per second. The A200 shares the new advanced LSI engine and CxProcess III technology discussed above also used in the new Maxxum 7D DSLR. The benefits of the new technology includes improved image processing and lower power consumption. SONY ANNOUNCES NEW STYLE OF CAMERA CAPABLE OF 5 MEGAPIXEL STILL IMAGES & MPEG 4 HIGH QUALITY VIDEO RECORDING (09/08/04)

Sony is announcing today a major new product style aimed at digital still camera owners who also want to capture important moments in a fairly high quality movie video format with audio for playback on TV sets. The new Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-M1 is a 5.1 megapixel, 3X optical zoom lens camera sharing much of the technology of the recent Sony T1 for very high quality still image capture which can also capture MPEG 4 movie video images at 640 by 480 resolution, and at 30 fps up to the capacity of a memory stick duo card. The use of MPEG 4 will allow the M1 to capture 54 minutes of video at the highest quality and resolution on a 1 Gigabyte Duo memory card which is significantly higher than current Sony cameras which use the MPEG 1 format/compression to capture just under 13 minutes on a 1 Gigabyte Memory Stick Pro card. We have one of the very few early prototype (not final design or performance) M1 cameras currently in existence in our hands at this moment and as we discuss further below, it is a very interesting camera!

As shown in the image above the new M1 has been designed for one hand operation and is held vertically during image capture. The 2.5 inch LCD screen folds in when not recording or if desired during playback and then when folded out for image capture it has a 270 degree rotation for variable shooting conditions and angels. The camera is also designed to make it easy to take both a still image and capture key moments in movie video. The M1 also has a new concept of recording called the hybrid record mode which essentially works by constantly capturing 5 seconds of video before each still shot, and then along with the still image it also records 3 seconds after the still shot with only a very brief delay in the video capture while taking the single still image. This new hybrid mode captures in the smaller 320 by 240 video capture size and is just one of several movie capture modes available.

As discussed earlier we have been using the new M1 for several days now and have found it to be a very fun camera. The camera appears to take the same very high quality 5 megapixel images still images that we found in the DSC-T1 released earlier this year. What we were very pleased to find was the very quick camera operations. The M1 does have a very fast focus and shutter lag, which helps insure you get the image at the moment you want. We also noticed that flash images were looking good, and to our eye looked a bit better then we recall on the T1. The movie capture is simple to begin and the vertical design allows fairly steady movie capture, although it does not have image stabilization. Playback is also very simple to perform and with the flexible 2.5 inch LCD screen you can configure the camera into a nice compact media viewer. The Video does have stereo capture however the playback is in Mono. It is as we said it is quite fun immediately playing back and listening to video moments just captured and so far they are looking very good.

As some of you know we have used many digital cameras, many with movie modes, and we are quite proficient in the use of digital video cameras. The M1 takes a step closer to being a two in one camera for both your digital still image needs and your important video movie needs. However there remain compromises. The M1 is bigger than the T1 and newly announced T3 for essentially the same features and quality of still image capture. In both the T1/T3 and M1 you do not have advanced controls, as you are given basically a point and shoot camera. The good news is that the T1/T3 and M1 work quite well as point and shoot cameras despite their small size. With respect to the movie video quality while much better than almost all current still image cameras with a movie mode, MPEG 4 is not yet providing you with the super sharp, stunning digital video that Mini-DV tape video cameras can provide. Accordingly, the M1 is not a replacement for those who want to focus on putting together the very highest quality home videos, especially if you are recording long events such as full sporting event games or your child in a school play etc... The M1 is more aimed at shooting shorter moments of 30 seconds to a few minutes and especially moments before and after still images that are part of a shooting session or special occasion. What the M1 does provide is very acceptable MPEG 4 video for playback on 4:3 aspect ratio monitors or most current TV sets at smaller to medium size screens. It can be played back on big screen TVs etc... but it is not DVD quality nor is it shot in widescreen format. The compression method used by MPEG 4 is a much more sophisticated and object dependent method so that main subjects look very pleasing, and important details retained, especially compared to virtually all other video formats out there right now used on DIGITAL STILL CAMERAS. The other major benefit of MPEG 4 is that you can record at almost the same quality as MPEG 2 used in DVDs at over 50% the file size or bit rates. Our only minor complaint about what Sony has done in their effort to promote the M1 as being able to take more movie video moments on a memory card than prior formats is that they chose as their highest quality a bit rate of only 2.5 Mbps. MPEG 2 in comparison often uses rates in the area of 10Mbps to retain very high quality. While we agree MPEG 4 can offer very good quality approaching DVD's MPEG 2 format, we would like to see Sony offer a 'Super Fine' Mode for those of us who want even higher quality for very very important family moments where perhaps 5 Mbps or 27 minutes on a one Gigabyte memory card would be our choice of trading off quality for shorter capture time. Regardless of our wish list for Sony's next deployment of Mpeg 4, we want to make it clear the the Mpeg 4 on the M1 so far appears to be very good, and quite an improvement over most other still cameras out there which offer movie modes, so it will be a camera many of you will want to follow and wait for final reviews etc....

Some of the other key features of the DSC-M1 include:

The new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-M1 will be available in December, 2004 for approximately $600. We have more information including additional product shots, the Sony Press-Release and Preliminary Specifications at our Preview page using the link below.

SONY ANNOUNCES 3 NEW DIGITAL CAMERAS (08/30/04)

Sony is announcing 3 new cameras today. The DSC-V3 is a 7.2 megapixel rangefinder style camera with a 4X Carl Zeiss optical zoom lens and large 2.5 inch LCD screen. We have had our hands on an early pre-production model of the V3 and while it has similarity to last year's V1 there are differences including the fact that it clearly has a larger hand grip compared to the previous V1 camera, it is black and its size is a bit bigger which makes its size and shape somewhat closer to the previous S-85 camera by Sony. Like other recent models in 2004 the V3 has the faster Real Image Processor for many improved results and faster camera operations. The V3 includes the Fine movie mode for capture of 640 by 480 at 30 fps with sound and has dual media slots which accept both Memory Sticks/Pro and Compact flash cards. The V3 is an advanced camera with many other features set forth below in our preview page, including full manual exposure controls, a hot shoe, RAW image capture, and night shot mode. The V3 camera will be available in October for around $700.

The Sony DSC-T3 is a thinner, faster 5.1 megapixel super compact digital camera with the same 3x optical zoom found in the current T1 camera. The new T3 has an improved LCD screen and gone is the somewhat protruding sliding lens cover that the T1 had in front. We have also handled a new T3 and compared the LCD with a T1 side by side. There is a clear improvement in display and the T3 is faster in operation and can shoot up to 4 burst images at 3 frames per second. It retains the fine movie mode.

The camera is equipped with a Transflective Clear Photo LCD that improves the quality of image display by preventing reflected light from interfering with it. Moreover, the new LCD's higher contrast, brightness and resolution ensure more accurate color reproduction.

Like the T1, the camera uses Duo and Duo Pro Memory Sticks, and will accept the 1GB Duo Pro card. The new T3 will be available in October 2004 for about $400.

Finally, Sony has really come up with a tiny tiny camera in the new 4 megapixel DSC-L1. We handled this little guy and were just amazed at the feat Sony has achieved in this camera. The overall size is just very small and similar to the recent U series cameras however Sony have now managed to retain a 3X Carl Zeiss optical zoom lens which has the diameter of about a dime. The lens design of this camera is really impressive and innovative with potential major design ramifications for future digital cameras. The L1 will come in silver, blue, black and red models. The Silver L1 will be available in October at a price of about $300 with the Red, Black, and Blue models expected in January 2005.

SONY ANNOUNCES NEW 7.2 MEGAPIXEL DSC-P150 CAMERA (07/21/04)

Sony is announcing today a new first of its kind 7.2 megapixel (1/1.8 inch) compact digital camera with a Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar 3X optical zoom lens called the Cyber-shot DSC-P150. The new camera is very similar to the recent P100 digital camera with one of the main differences being the increased CCD resolution from 5 to 7.2 megapixels. The new P150 will produce image files with a resolution of 3072 by 2304 and will allow printing of 8 by 10 prints with a resolution of 300dpi. We have handled an early sample P150 model and found it to be quite thin at just 1 inch in thickness, and it is very sharp looking in silver. We have not had a chance to evaluate image quality with this new 7.2 megapixel processor.

Like the P100 and other recent consumer digital cameras from Sony, the P150 takes advantage of Sony's Real Imaging Processor circuitry which we have found greatly improves the start-up time, shot to shot time, as well as the auto focus, flash cycle, and auto exposure speeds. The recent processor also assists with capturing images with better color and white balance results. As we indicated above, the P150 is very thin at just 1 inch in thickness making it easy to grip, shoot and then put away in a pocket. It uses a Sony InfoLithium battery which is capable of capturing 310 images per charge that can be displayed on the 1.8 inch color LCD screen. While the P150 is essentially a point and shoot camera, it also has manual exposure and flash controls along with 9 pre-set scene modes such as landscape, fireworks and beach. The P150 is further able to be used under-water up to depths of 132 feet with the optional Cyber-Shot Marine Pack model MPK-PHB and like the P100 it can also be used with an optional telephoto or wide angle conversion lens. The P150 can also be used with the optional Cyber-shot Station CSS-PHA camera accessory available now for $80.00. The station allows for playing back slide shows or videos on a TV using a bundled infrared remote controller or transferring images to a PC while charging the battery. The P150 is PictBridge Compatible.

Some of the other key features of the P150 include, 2X digital zoom, 0-14X smart zoom using the full CCD for better image quality, live histogram display, 14 bit DXP A/D conversion for extended dynamic range, .5 area multi-point auto focus, Auto Focus Illuminator for low light conditions, selectable focus mode, pre-flash metering, slow shutter noise reduction, MPEG Movie VX with VGA 640 by 480 resolution at 30 frames per second, use of memory stick and memory stick pro (pro sticks are required for the VGA 30 fps movie mode), 5 shot burst mode at 1.1 frames per second, and a really fun multi-burst mode which allows 16 shots to be captured as part of a single 1280 by 960 image which can play back sequentially in the camera at 1/7.5, 1/15 and 1/30 of a second. Finally, the P150 has these additional features: 3:2 Aspect Ratio Mode, Adjustable Color Saturation/Contrast, Audio/Video Output, Clear Color/Clear Luminance NR, MPEG1 Cue, Review and Divide, Multi-Use Terminal, and it Supports High Speed USB 2.0. The camera will come in Silver, Black and Blue!

KONICA MINOLTA ANNOUNCES 4 NEW DIGITAL CAMERAS (07/07/04)

Konica Minolta is announcing today four new digital cameras including some with new ground breaking features you won't want to miss reading about!

The first camera is the small Dimage X31, a simple to use snapshot type digital camera which features a 3.2 megapixel CCD (1/3.2 inch), a very fast start-up time of just 1 second, a f/2.8 3X optical non-protruding zoom lens, the ultra thin & light-weight (4.1 ounces) design of the X series cameras, Macro capabilities as close as 3.9 inches without having to switch to a separate Macro Mode, an intuitive user-friendly GUI Icon based menu, auto ISO from 50 -200, and the X31 has an overall responsive operation including an amazing 0.1 second shutter release time lag. The camera also has a separate playback button which allows users instant viewing after each shot on the 1.5 inch color LCD screen, and you can even do some image editing such as adding in frames or combining 2 images together side by side. There is an extended movie recording XR mode at 320 by 240 without audio which allows capture of digital camera movie clips up to the memory cards (SD type) capacity (The X31 does not have the PC Web Camera ability of last year's X21). Konica Minolta indicates this is going to be a stylish or fashionable camera which will be sold soon at an affordable price although we did not see a MSRP price or target availability date. We have said this before but it is worth repeating, we have used a Minolta Xi quite a bit over the past year and a half and we have found the small thin size allows it to be more easily be taken almost anywhere, and thus you are often able to get shots you might have otherwise not been able to take. Unlike the Xi, the new X31 uses AA batteries which are easier to find and replace. This new improved 2004 model is going to be well worth your consideration, especially those that need a take anywhere, affordable camera, regardless if this is your main family camera or just a back-up to another camera. We have been very very pleased with the resized images for web sharing, and prints up to 5 by 7 inches look great from the Xi so we have high expectations foe this newer yet less expensive X31 model with a similar CCD and optics yet improved processing and other features! For further details including the official Press Release, Backgrounder, Specifications and product photos see our Dimage X31 Preview Page.

The next camera also in the X series is called the Dimage X50 and features a 5 megapixel 1/2.5 inch primary color CCD along with the similar type 2.8X non-protruding optical zoom lens (f2.8- f5.0) now outfitted with a sliding lens cover for added protection. The new X50 increases the LCD to a larger 2.0 inch (115,00 pixels) size. Like the X31, this new flagship model in the X-series also features an even faster 0.5 second (world's fastest in this category) start-up time, a stylish, small, ultra-thin and light-weight take anywhere design, and with 5 megapixels it allows sharing of larger sized prints beyond 8 by 10 inches. Included is a new Automatic Digital Subject Program Selection with automatic choice of the optimal shooting mode for the particular subject at hand. The Dimage X50 uses the CX Process II image processing technology to assist in producing high quality images with natural colors. The camera also has an ability to take close-up shots up to 4 inches without need to switch into a Macro mode. There is a Super Macro Mode for images as close as 2.4 inches! The X50 has PictBridge capability allowing you to print directly to PictBridge enabled printers without need of a computer. What is also very exciting in our opinion is the ability to use the X50 with a new Optional Marine Case for underwater photography! The X50 also features what is called UHS which is short for Ultra High Speed Continuous Advance which allows you to get 11 frames per second at an image size of 1280 by 960. The X50 also has the XR movie mode at 320 by 240 at 15 fps (30 fps in a night movie mode) with Audio, along with a 180 minute Audio recording mode and 15 second voice memos can be attached to images. The X50 has auto ISO between 50 and 160 or user selectable 50, 100, 200 and 400 settings. The X50 has USB 2.0 connectivity with a PC for transfers of files at up to 12 Mbps. The X50 uses the NP-700 lithium battery. Again, we got no official word from Konica Minolta on a price or release date. For more details see our Dimage X50 Preview Page.

And now for something different for you advanced amateurs, we move on to the affordable new 3.2 (1/2/5 inch CCD) megapixel Dimage Z10 Digital Camera which features an 8X "Mega Zoom" high performance f/3.2-f/3.4) Optical zoom lens, new Rapid Auto Focus (just .3 seconds) with a Predictive Focus Control for moving objects or sports shooting, fast start-up time of just 0.5 seconds, use of four AA batteries with a new power efficiency allowing up to 500 images with the included set of Alkaline batteries, and it is relatively small and light weight at just 10.6 ounces. The Z10 has a Macro Mode which allows shots as close as just 0.4 of an inch and like the X50 uses the Konica Minolta CxProcess II for high image processing and super detailed images. The Z10 also has the Automatic Digital Subject Program Selection capability which chooses the best recording mode for each image. It has an auto and selectable ISO range from 64 to 400. The Z10 has auto white balance, 5 presets and a custom white balance setting along with controls for contrast, sharpness, and color modes. The Z10 has 16 MB of built-in internal memory and you can capture pictures at a rate of 1.5 frames per second with the last six shots stored onto the memory card. For advanced shooter the camera includes Manual Exposure controls and there are 3 metering modes including Spot metering. For picture capture the Z10 has a switch finder which allows you to either view the scene through a viewfinder or use the 1.5 inch LCD monitor display. The Z10 is compatible with PICTBRIDGE printing. It also has VGA Movie Recording without sound at 15 frames per second or 320 by 240 at 30 fps using the new XR Extended Recording ability allowing movies up to the capacity of your SD card. The Z10 is compatible with the optional Wide Converter Kit (ZCW-200) for wide angle capture. For more details see our Dimage Z10 Preview Page.

Well, we saved the best for last at least for all you advanced amateur and serious photographers out there. The new Konica Minolta Dimage Z3 has a combination of features we have long waited for and now can say are finally here! The Z3 is a four megapixel (1/2.5 inch CCD) camera with a HUGE 12X GTO APO (with high performance AD Glass at f2.8-f4.5) OPTICAL ZOOM LENS AND KONICA MINOLTA'S CCD-SHIFT ANTI-SHAKE System! On top of that the camera has a VGA MOVIE MODE AT 30 FPS with AUDIO which both ZOOMS to 12X (35mm to 420mm) AND USES the ANTI-SHAKE System. WOW! The Dimage Z3 also has the new Rapid Focus which Konica Minolta indicates offers the fastest focus in its class (just 0.15 seconds at widest angles) and it also has the Predictive Focus Control for "unmatched high-speed focusing that brings out the very best in the Dimage Z3's superior ability to capture fast moving subjects." All of this is being processed using the Konica Minolta proprietary CXProcess II technology for high quality/detailed and natural colored images. The Anti-Shake system found in the new Z3 camera uses the same technology used in the Dimage A-series cameras which we have tested extensively. As claimed the Anti-Shake system allows you to shoot at 2-3 shutter speeds slower and will be a great benefit to those shooting at higher zoom levels or in dim light as where camera shake can especially make it harder to take hand held shots. We have seen the Anti-Shake system outside of a camera and it is an amazing design that works incredibly fast and effective. No other camera company is currently offering this technology nor combining an anti-shake system with such a large high quality zoom lens and fast focusing system.

The Dimage Z3 has many other great features including a rapid start-up time, very fast shutter lag time, a real motion monitor with 50 frames per-second capability for smooth video viewing, and a fast 2.2 frames per second continuous shooting mode. The VGA (640 by 480) Movie Mode captures 30 fps in both the standard image quality and now a new FINE mode for very high quality video capture. There is even a Silent Zoom feature which uses a new Silent Zoom mechanism that reduces the amount of noise that is picked up on the Movie Audio when using the optical Zoom. The XR or Extended Range Movie function allows capture of movies up to the capacity of your SD card and their is even a Night Movie Mode as well as a Movie Frame Capture ability. The UHS Continuous shooting mode allows capture of 15 images at 10 frames per second. Like the Z10 the Dimage Z3 also has Progressive Capture allowing 6 images in standard and 15 in UHS to be captured automatically when the user stops pressing the shutter release button. Despite the large 12X Zoom Konica Minolta states that the Z3 still has a relatively light weight and compact body along with a nice ergonomic grip that makes it easy and comfortable to carry around. The Z3 has a Real Motion LCD monitor which delivers images for viewing at up to 50 frames per second. There is built-in Noise reduction, full manual exposure controls, spot metering, Automatic Digital Subject Program Selection, and a 0.4 inch Macro Mode. It has PictBridge printer compatibility, a new ergonomic design and can use the Wide Angle Converter ZCW-300 Kit along with accessory flash units. The Z3 has both a 1.5 inch LCD with 78,000 pixels and an Electronic Viewfinder, 0.3 type with 118,000 pixels. Control settings include ISO at 50, 100, 200 and 400, there is a custom White Balance control, contrast, sharpness and color modes settings, and key customization. The Z3 uses 4 AA batteries and is USB 2.0 compatible. It weighs in at just 11.8 ounces. For a lot more information including some interesting and easy to read technical discussion on the Anti-Shake system and other features etc..see our Dimage Z3 Preview Page.
