NIKON COOLPIX 3100 vs. SONY CYBERSHOT DSC-P72

CRITICAL EYE REVIEW of
Nikon COOLPIX 3100 and Sony CYBERSHOT DSC-P72

Conclusions

While both cameras are imperfect, both are capable of taking excellent photos. Overall, the Sony produced more acceptable shots than the Nikon - especially if one is not planning extensive post-shooting editing. It's fast focusing and short shutter lag ease the transition to digital for new digital camera users. Its fast response and speedier flash also make it more suitable for candid shots of active people than the Nikon, such as shots of fidgeting children. The slow response of the Nikon will frustrate many users in such situations and lead to many missed shots. Nikon users will need to develop prefocusing shooting techniques to compensate for the camera's slowness.

In contrast, well-lit, outdoor shots looked better on the Nikon - the colors were more accurate and the pictures looked sharper and richer. The Nikon's superior macro abilities also make it the winner for close-ups of flowers and small objects. The Nikon is also smaller and lighter.

So which one to buy? The choice depends on the user. Those wanting a camera primarily for shooting family photos with minimum learning and minimal editing will be happier with the responsiveness of the Sony. Those primarily shooting artistic pictures of scenery, plants and flowers, and stationary people and pets will be happier with the Nikon's superior optics.
