PHOTOKINA 2002, COLOGNE, GERMANY, September 25, 2002 – Fuji Photo FilmCo., Ltd. is proud to announce the debut of the FinePix M603, a new type of product that combines state-of-the-art digital still camera and digital movie camera capabilities in a unique vertically oriented body that represents a new concept in digital camera design. Built around Fujifilm’s exclusive 3rd-Generation Super CCD, the FinePix M603 delivers ultra-high quality still images, ultra-high sensitivity for low-light and fast action shooting and "Motion Photo" VGA-size full-frame movie recording with sound.
The camera supports xD-Picture Card, the new digital camera media. The FinePix M603 will be showcased at the Fujifilm PHOTOKINA 2002 booth. While the highly competitive market for digital cameras was until recently dominated by the contest for pixel count, manufacturers are increasingly looking toward more significant ways of differentiating their products from those of competitors. Fujifilm took a notable step in this direction with the recent introduction of the FinePix F601 and S602 models, which employ the company’s proprietary 3rd-Generation Super CCD to offer dramatically higher sensitivity as well as high-quality movie recording performance. The new FinePix M603 marks a further advance in movie recording performance.
With 3.1 million effective pixels, the camera can produce ultra-high quality still image files of 2832 x 2128 (6.03 million) recording pixels. The 1/1.7-inch 3rd-Generation Super CCD offers a wide range of sensitivities from an ISO-equivalent 100 to ultra-high ISO 800* and 1600* sensitivity settings, allowing higher shutter speeds and non-flash available light photography while maintaining superb image quality and minimal noise. Other user-friendly features include a high-performance Super EBC Fujinon 2x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 38 – 76mm on a 35mm camera), smooth 4.4x digital zooming (in 640 x 480-pixel mode), a continuous shooting function of 4 frames/second at full resolution for up to 5 frames, and a Voice Memo function.
In addition to its outstanding still photography capabilities, the FinePix M603 boasts the most advanced “Motion Photo” VGA-size full frame movie recording/playback capabilities of any existing digital camera to date. Fujifilm’s world-class Pixel Mixing Technology, realized by the 3rd-Generation Super CCD, enables VGA-size (640 x 480 pixels) movie recording at 30 frames/second. The FinePix M603 also offers movie recording with zoom and continuous autofocus on a moving-subject. The camera can record approx. 15 minutes of moving files of 640 x 480 pixels at 30 frames/second with a 1GB Microdrive™, or approx. 30 minutes at 15 frames/second.
The M603 features such amenities as a very large 2.5-inch LCD monitor with a custom monitor hood for easier viewing in bright daylight, and a convenient handgrip attachment for worry-free camera holding. To facilitate extended movie recording, a newly designed high-capacity battery pack NP-120 is available as an option. The camera features dual media slots (xD-Picture Card and Microdrive™) to accommodate larger numbers of still images or longer movie recording times. Because playback facilities are also an important part of the enjoyment of digital movies, the FinePix M603 includes a full range of playback functions. Repeat Play mode, for example, allows looped playback of any part of a movie clip. Fast Search enables searching at 2–60x the normal playback speed, while Easy Edit lets users delete unwanted scenes and insert new material.
The convenient PictureCradle (optional) offers easy PC file transfer and battery charging. The FinePix M603 is scheduled for release late autumn.
